Habib Abd al-Jabbar Hurmuzlu

Habib Abd al-Jabbar Hurmuzlu was an Iraqi Turkmen lawyer, journalist, linguistic researcher, and translator. Born in Kirkuk's Begler quarter in 1933, he belonged to the city's Turkmen Hurmuzlu family. He graduated from the University of Baghdad's Faculty of Law in 1954, practiced law in Kirkuk for six years, and joined other Turkmen lawyers in representing the families of victims of the 1959 Kirkuk massacre without charge in the military courts. He later completed a master's degree in administrative law at the University of Baghdad; ORSAM's institutional biography dates the degree to 1970, while FUZÛLÎ's memorial biography gives 1975, so no single year is asserted here. From 1960 to 1980 he served in Iraq's Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, rising to director-general of legal affairs. He helped publish the Beşir newspaper and was editorial secretary of Kardeşlik magazine from 1960 to 1977. After settling in Turkey, he founded the Izmir branch of the Iraqi Turks Culture and Solidarity Association and worked with the Iraq Research Center, Global Strategy Institute, and ORSAM. He devoted his research to Iraqi Turkmen speech and to Turkmen legal and cultural memory. He died in Ankara on 10 April 2025, aged ninety-two, and was buried in Karşıyaka Cemetery the following day.
